The Minister of Mines and Energy confirms that electrical subsidies will continue

Ministry of Mines and Energy. Bogota D.C. September 17th, 2018. The Minister of Mines and Energy, Maria Fernanda Suarez, has cleared up certain reports which claimed that the National Government had been thinking about eliminating the electrical subsidies for the first, second and third social stratification groups

"The Administration of President Duque acknowledges the importance of these subsidies for lower income Colombians. In this sense, all of the efforts are being made in order to finance them as part of the 2019 budget," the Minister explained.

She said the budget presented by the previous Administration includes a financing deficit for said subsidies that is worth almost $2.5 trillion pesos, which is why the Ministry of Finance is working in order to cover such a shortfall. "We understand the importance of electrical subsidies for the first, second and third social strata, so our commitment is to work for their continuation", Minister Maria Fernanda Suarez stated.
